What Manali gives you that a guidebook cannot
Manali splits in two: the town, which is busy and commercial, and Old Manali up the hill, which is quieter and where most people wish they had stayed. Solang and Rohtang are the standard day trips, and Rohtang needs a permit issued on a daily quota.
Winter and summer are different destinations. Snow from December, and the passes north closed. From June the road to Ladakh opens and Manali becomes the start of one of the great drives rather than an endpoint.
The Beas runs through the whole valley and the rafting section below Pirdi is short but real.
