Why go with a local
What Munnar gives you that a guidebook cannot
Munnar is tea, and tea means the hills are terraced to the horizon in a way photographs flatten badly. The estates are working plantations, not attractions — access is a matter of who you are with.
The monsoon runs heavy here from June, and much of what people come for is in cloud. September to March is the reliable window. Eravikulam National Park closes for calving roughly February to March, which catches a lot of visitors out.
The drive up from Kochi is three to four hours of switchbacks and is genuinely part of the experience — worth doing in daylight.
