Why go with a local
What Jaipur gives you that a guidebook cannot
Amber Fort is the reason most people come and the reason most people leave disappointed — they arrive at eleven with everyone else, take the elephant ride, see four courtyards and go. The fort opens at eight. The Sheesh Mahal with morning light coming through it, before the tour groups, is a genuinely different building.
The old city is laid out on a grid that predates almost every planned city in the world, and it is pink because a maharaja painted it for a royal visit in 1876 and the city liked it. Most of what is worth seeing is inside a two-kilometre walk of Badi Chaupar, and almost none of it is signposted.
Jaipur is also where the block-printing and gem-cutting trades still work at scale. A Localite can get you into a workshop rather than a shop, which is a different afternoon.
